Rachel Garland’s paintings incorporate the real and imagined. Depicting scenes from her current domestic realm alongside more fantastical, dream-like imagery and symbolism, these paintings provide us with strong narratives about domestic life and motherhood. The magpie and rabbit are recurring figures within the artists work, often providing a sense of joyous celebration or wry humour.
Rachael Garland has been regularly exhibiting throughout New Zealand since 2001. A finalist in the Goldwater National Art Awards in 2002, Garland completed her diploma in fine arts at the Quay School of the Arts in 2003 majoring in print making. Since this time she has predominantly worked from her Wanganui studio, combining painting and printmaking with part time teaching and the requirements of life as a mother.
